What is up with me and these long titles? Well, nevermind.

I’ve noticed that plenty of Indonesian people around me, whether it be in real life, or forums, have been quite “hostile” towards Malaysia. Not in the sense that they’re aiming machine gun shots at Malaysians, obviously, but by frequently referring to them as “thieves”.

Now, because I am usually clueless about the ongoings of my own country (I’m not proud of this), I just knew about it since a few weeks ago (see? not that late). I think it stemmed from the incidence in which Malaysia “stole” the dance Reog Ponorogo, though the Malaysian ambassador admitted, “Reog Ponorogo milik Indonesia!” (it belongs to Indonesia!), to quote him. There’s the case about this song, too, but since I don’t know about that, I won’t go saying things about it in case I am immensely wrong about it.

Firstly, this is all my could-be-quite-subjective opinion on it, so please don’t whine in an annoying manner. It’s up to you to define what would be annoying, but I don’t think there’s many of those kind of people reading my blog (if any). I am not an expert on culture, or whatever other “thieveries” Malaysia has committed, so also feel free to correct me where I’m wrong. I’m just going by what I know.

Now, didn’t Malaysia use to be something like a part of Indonesia? Besides, we’ve been beside each other since, like, forever (ha) that our cultures ought to be similar. They also never claimed that Reog Ponorogo belonged to them (well, even if they did, the ambassador changed that), they just said that it’s available as a tourist attraction. Things such as culture aren’t patented/copyrighted, so we have no rights to stop them from carrying out the dance.

They could also end up developing it as something that’ll be completely different from the original Reog Ponorogo. Just like manga that stemmed off American cartoons with strange proportions that now has the ability to overtake it in popularity, if it hasn’t already.

Sorry, it just had to lead to manga. Change of topic time.

I’ve heard something about the “thievery” of batik, too, but once more, it’s not patented, so there’s no such thing as thievery of batik. But were Malaysia to patent batik, then I would strongly disagree. No one, Indonesia, nor Malaysia, in fact, any other country, should patent such a thing. Culture is to be shared by everyone. If I’m not wrong, such textile-dyeing technique has been performed since a millennium ago, most likely in Ancient Egypt, aka the source of everything. It can also be found in some African/Asian countries. Do you see them claiming it? So Indonesians, if you don’t want Malaysians to claim things as theirs (if they do), you shouldn’t either.

Batik isn’t exclusively Indonesia’s. Did Siberia or Nigeria or Cameroon or whatever get mad at Indonesia for being the one most famous for it? Sheesh.

So for those still whining over it: PLZ CRY MOAR

Note the fact that however, I am glad that this caused people to start realizing just how precious our diverse cultures are. Unity in Diversity!

Another note is that by insulting Malaysia, you are being fucking hypocrites in a way. Indonesia has made countless carbon copies of popular TV shows from other countries, which are, in fact, copyrighted. Yes, I know that you’re probably aware of this, and you know that it’s definitely stealing by the international definition, and that you probably don’t consider yourself as a part of these people. But just letting you know. =)
